Might Weekend

Traveling with a band is something I don’t get to do much anymore. So this past weekend was a treat. Might, a band I do with my friends Matto, Mike, and Dan Murphy played two shows, one in Buffalo and another in Syracuse. We packed up the Subaru, not the ideal car for hitting the road with your band, and traveled the great white north of Western NY. I’m actually glad we took my car because it’s one of the best vehicles I have ever driven in the snow, and there was plenty of snow.

Wasn’t really the best idea to hit this region in the middle of January, but the rock must go on. Might is not the typical style of band I've been known for, it’s more melodic punk and post hardcore then anything else. I enjoy playing something different once in a while, and I am pretty happy with the way this band turned out.

We hit the road Saturday, and rolled into Buffalo. Matto actually moved up there this past August so it was nice to see him and his wife Emma. Thanks to our busy schedules we hadn’t actually played together in a month, so Mike and I sat in Matto’s living room going over the parts about an hour before the show.

We loaded our gear into a little art space called Sugar City. My hands were cramping, but we all managed to play pretty well. After our set we headed to another show, a benefit to help someone pay for their medical expesense. We were all very happy that it was at a bar. I had a few beers with some old Buffalo friends, then we headed to Wegmans, and then went back to Matto’s to watch The Young Ones, eat Doritos, and pass out. We ate a wonderful breakfast at Amy's in the morning and then white knuckeled it to the 'Cuse.

Our show was at the Westcott Community Center. I love the space and I have played a lot of great shows there. The theme of the night, well between song banter, was the ages of those who were in bands. One singer pointed out that almost all the bands had members that were involved in hardcore for over 10 years, and it we were an example of people who didn't give up punk because we were older.

It was a fun trip full of old friends, but next time I think we will do it in warmer weather.

Photo 3: A drawing of a Dinosaur holding an AK, we were told by our waitress it was done by a 9 year old.
